Settle
Gateway to the Three Peaks

Picture of Ye Olde Naked Man Cafe

Settle is a thriving Dales market town with scenery that looks like something out of the movies. You will be amazed at what you see here. Well known for it's hospitality - lots of cafes and pubs. The town is known around the world as the starting point of the Settle-Carlisle Railway. It is also the gateway to the three most well known peaks in England – Penyghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. These are often referred to simply as the Three Peaks.

The scenery around here offers cliffs, caves, and walking trails. You can spend days enjoying them. You'll love the rich history and detail you find in the buildings and bridges around the town. For those who enjoy climbing, there is a trail that leads to the top of a peak, offering you a unique opportunity to look down at the town and the surrounding areas.

The Three Peaks are the most visited area around here. 160 scenic square kilometres with great places to hike and have a picnic. It is renowned as having one of the best upland ecosystems, and scientists from all over the world come to study it. Each one of the Three Peaks is between 650 and 750 metres high.

A gentle stroll through the streets and alleyways soon reveals remarkable architecture. It seems that quirky buildings squeezed between cobble-stoned alleys and grand, imposing mansions are to be found around every corner. One such striking building is the 17th century Folly. It was built to make a statement by a wealthy merchant in the 1670's. Today it holds the Museum of North Craven Life - well worth a visit.

The market comes to life every Tuesday. Traders travel in from miles around to offer their best merchandise. As they have since 1249 when the town was granted its charter. Full of free entertainment to enjoy while you take a break from shopping. The market place is surrounded by family owned cafes and restaurants, offering you a great selection of food choices.

The town is well known for the Settle-Carlisle Railway that was constructed between 1870 and 1876. Steam trains covered thousands of miles on these tracks. Today the railway is still in use, offering steam-hauled journeys along this most scenic railway route. The rhythmic clickety-clack of the wheels over the rails is a great way to relax - letting you enjoy the scenery whilst riding on a piece of history.
